“We really look up to a lot of big bands. They’ve got there for a reason – great songs. If you want to have longevity and to get somewhere as a band, you’ve got to have great songs.” Ant West

In an age where many bands are happy to exist quietly in a small niche, Futures singer Ant West’s words are unusually bold. But then they’re a band who enjoy making a statement, both in their widescreen, anthemic songs and in how they present themselves. It’s there in the title of their debut album Start A Fire. Sure, it’s the name of one of its typically communally uplifting songs. But, as guitarist Casey Roarty points out: “Start a Fire is what we want to do in music. It’s a title that says ‘This is the start of something’.”

The statement is backed up throughout the album, music that sits comfortably with the band’s shared superstar icons like Foo Fighters, Biffy Clyro, Death Cab For Cutie and The Killers.
Not the coolest choices, perhaps, but underground cred points aren’t what interest Futures. “The bigger you get, the more people hate you,” reasons Ant. “Those bands are where they are because of great songs. If that makes us unfashionable, so be it. Those are great guitar bands.”
And Futures - as anyone fortunate enough to witness their intense, uplifting shows can attest - are already a great guitar band.

The new single Start A Fire was released on 20th February.
